Practice Education in Healthcare

The PG Cert in Practice Education in Healthcare offers students the opportunity to develop their knowledge, critical thinking and skills in contemporary theories and models of practice education to enable the delivery of clinical interventions to meet the needs of patients in a range of care settings.

A postgraduate certificate normally comprises 3 modules, which you can complete in one year as a part time course of study. On successful completion you will be awarded 60 CATs points at Level 7.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have a professional qualification in Nursing, Midwifery or Allied Health and Social Care Services and currently or recently be working in a relevant practice area. They shall normally hold a relevant 2.2 Honours degree or above, or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University. Applicants with a 3rd Class Honours degree (or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University) plus level 7 Post Graduate study will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The Programme

  • Course Content

    The modules focus on education research, theories, models, assessments, skills teaching, simulation and evaluation to support the delivery of safe and effective skills sharing and clinical interventions in the context of inter-disciplinary team collaboration and person-centred care.

    • HSN7084 Theories and principles of practice education.
    • HSN7085 Practice teaching and learning for health and social care professionals.
    • HSN7091 Simulation based education, theory and practice in health care.
  • Outcomes

    Completion of these modules and PG Cert in Practice Education will permit the application for the Queen’s Merit Award and Higher Education Academy Fellowship status. Students can elect to either exit with the award of Postgraduate Certificate in Practice Education or carry credits forward into further postgraduate study should they wish to do so. For example, students may wish to complete additional level 7 modules and a dissertation to make up the credits for the award of a Masters Degree in Advanced Professional Practice (Practice Education).

  • Selection Criteria

    Applicants must hold at least a degree for entry to Level 7 (postgraduate level) study. Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements should contact the School for advice.

    International Trained Nurses/Midwives: If you hold an international qualification you will need to provide a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability. This should be obtained prior to submitting your application. You can apply for a statement through the ENIC website:  Statement of Comparability (enic.org.uk)    

    Students accessing this stand alone module must work in the relevant clinical area.

    Please note that these courses are not open to international applicants living outside the UK/ROI.
