Syrian Refugees Project

Syrian Children

Dr Julie Norman will facilitate audio production workshops with Syrian refugees on the Turkish border to examine how the experience of producing sound-based media projects contributes to refugee youths' sense of resilience and contributes to media literacy that might counter violent extremist messaging.

The project will also explore how involvement in media production might counter violent extremist messaging.  It will investigate how arts interventions function in contexts when participants have directly experienced conflict, are still displaced, and when the conflict is on-going.

Dr Norman will work with the Al Salam School in Reyhanli, Turkey, which delivers free education to over 1,880 Syrian refugee children, to develop and implement the audio workshops. The workshops will explore different ways of using sound to share personal narratives through spoken word, poetry, digital storytelling, and podcasting. This research is closely linked to Dr Norman’s work Listening to the Voices Marginalised by Conflict.
